A Different Sort of Finish

When I was young my Grandmother taught me how to latch hook. She had made a couple of rugs and I really wanted to learn. Unfortunately at that time there was no such thing as a kit really available where I lived so I just practised on scraps. Years later I came across a Christmas latch hook kit but for the longest time I was worried that I wouldn't be able to remember how it was done so it sat in the box.

Finally a few years ago I decided to unpack it and give it a try, I have to say that I enjoyed it so much. It was lots and lots of fun. I am disappointed that there is still a lack of nice latch hook kits out there and that they are all incredibly expensive as I would love to do some more of them. If anyone knows where I can even get the base printed canvas and the wool lengths separately that would be wonderful.

Anyway here is the one I finished in all its glory. I still love it and have decided that I will try and get it finished off as a wall hanging this year so it can join our decorations.

Edit: Rachel very rightly pointed out that there is no scale in the first picture of Santa so I have added a 12"/30cm ruler to the bottom left to give you all an idea of the size.

  1. Aww, your finish is simply gorgeous with Santa looking all fluffy and cosy and ready for a big hug! You've done a brilliant job! There's no indication of size so how big is it?

  4. Very nice!

My grandpa taught me to latch hook. He started doing it when he was in the hospital to keep himself from getting too bored. The first rug he finished was always in the entry way of my grandparents' house (now I wonder what happened to it...) I always remember getting really excited when I had the roll of little yarns to work with (and my grandfather was very proud of his yarn-frugality... if he had *just enough* to finish he would show it off! lol!)

  5. Great finish, as you say the kits are still quite limited. I have a huge one sat in my craft box with only a few rows done. Maybe one day I will get it finished.

Did you have a look at sew and so? I know they sell the backing etc.

  6. Looks great :-) I never got into latch hook but have a friend who loves it. Yes, I've noticed how expensive they can be; sometimes I see them on clearance. Have fun with it :-)

  8. You should do what I do now, and make your own latch hook projects! I bought the blank canvas, made my own pattern, then just cut lengths of regular yarn to use. It works great!

  9. Very cool latch hook Santa!! I helped my cousin latch hook a rug replicated from the Shining. It was fun and a huge piece. Take a look:

  11. I've seen the canvas for sale at michaels near the kits. The yarn I could only suggest buying as full skeins and cutting yourself. It would seem like a lot of work but if you had access to a long slicer thing you could cut several at once

  14. Black Sheep Wools my LNS has a good selection. I can't tell you whether they are cheap or not as I've no idea what they cost! I have a very vague memory of having tried this at school...

  15. Cute finish. First DH and I used to do this while watching TV. We usually did large ones, so he would work on one side and I would work on the other.

  16. Oooh this is a really cute latch hook design and will make an adorable wall hanging! Santas should be fuzzy haha. I did one a long while ago that involved a huge amount of pink. I could never stand for them to actually become rugs though! Wonder what happened to that piece...

  18. I love this Santa, he's so cute! I used to latch hook when I was younger, and all three of my boys did kits for 4H projects. I know there are still places you can buy kits online, I'm just not sure of the pricing. Check out these websites:

Hope you find something you like!

  19. Love this piece. I agree with you in that there aren't alot of great choices in the latchhook kits. But this one is fantastic. Beautiful finish and in time for Christmas too.
